Practice Pieces: Shore and Wolf on Snow

Green hills rolling down to an ocean shore Terrible, terrible work, but an important stage of my development as a painter, I think. The sky, for instance, is gorgeous and I learned a lot trying to texture the cliffs…as bad as they came out.

So yeah, I’m not proud of Shore…and yet I feel like it ought to be recorded here so I can look back later and marvel at how far I’ve come.

This wasn’t a failed painting, in the sense that I screwed it all up or was just scribbling. It was just one done when I wasn’t very good, and that’s something else altogether. That’s a memory.

A happy wolf running across a snowy landscape. Like the last picture, Wolf on Snow isn’t very good. The difference is that this one I knew going in wasn’t likely to be: I wanted to try watercolors with fluid fast movements and less attention paid to the kind of lines that require holding your breath to keep them precisely where you want them.

Done over several days, but each session was only a few minutes each. Each session used only one or two colors at a time.

And besides…he just looks so happy!
